What is Hand-Rummy and can you declare on the first turn?
Hand-Rummy is a named first-turn condition in one documented Indian Rummy form, not a universal feature of every table.
Direct answer: Pagat describes Hand-Rummy as arranging the original thirteen dealt cards into a complete valid hand and declaring on your first turn without drawing from the closed or open pile. It is a special documented rule. Many apps do not offer it, so check the room help and declaration button before assuming a first-turn bonus or score.

Do not confuse it with a fast normal win
If you draw a card and then complete the hand, that is a normal early declaration rather than Hand-Rummy under this definition. Likewise, simply holding a pure sequence on the first turn is not enough; the entire thirteen-card hand must already be valid.
Safe practice procedure
- Do not draw immediately.
- Group all thirteen cards and count them once.
- Confirm the required pure sequence.
- Read whether the table recognizes Hand-Rummy before pressing declare.

Worked first-turn review
Suppose the deal is 2♥-3♥-4♥, 6♣-7♣-8♣, 10♦-J♦-Q♦-K♦ and 5♠-5♥-5♣. Those group lengths total thirteen, all three runs are pure, and the final group is a set. If the current room explicitly supports Hand-Rummy, this is the kind of opening hand to review before touching either pile.
Why the button may be absent
A digital room may implement only its normal draw-discard-declare flow. If no first-turn declaration route or Hand-Rummy rule is shown, do not try random taps, disconnect, or deliberately time out. Continue under the displayed rules or leave before the hand if the variant is not the one you intended to practise.
Scoring needs a separate check
The existence of a named rule does not establish the points or bonus in a particular app. Pagat records one scoring treatment, but another table may score it differently or not recognize it at all. This academy page explains card validity and timing, not cash value or guaranteed benefit.
At a home table, announce the Hand-Rummy rule before cards are dealt. Introducing it only after someone receives a complete opening hand would change the agreed conditions after the outcome is partly known.
